Full Description

A violent incident at Winchester Prison has resulted in a lengthy sentence for inmate Dashiell Mahi, who was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to a fellow prisoner.

The attack occurred when Mahi, aged 26 and previously residing on North Road in Richmond-upon-Thames, approached victim Aaron Phillips in his cell. Mahi had concealed a kettle in a bucket after leaving his own cell and waited behind the shower block door before entering Phillips' cell and throwing the boiling water over him. This caused severe burns to Phillips' face, neck, and shoulder. As Phillips lay on the ground, Mahi continued the assault by punching him until prison officers intervened to stop the attack.

Phillips, who is in his 20s, was subsequently transferred to a specialist hospital unit for treatment of his burns. The incident was promptly reported to the police, leading to an investigation by Hampshire Constabulary. Evidence gathered showed the premeditated nature of the assault, including Mahi's movements within the prison.

Mahi stood trial at Salisbury Crown Court in June, where a jury found him guilty following a three-day hearing. The sentencing took place on Monday, 18 August, at Winchester Crown Court. The judge classified Mahi as a dangerous offender, taking into account his previous convictions, which included violence in prison and one for the sexual exploitation of a child. He received an eight-year custodial sentence, with an additional two years on extended licence.

Acting Detective Sergeant Matthew Chapman of Hampshire Constabulary commented after the hearing: “This was a premeditated attack on another inmate, and could have resulted in more serious injury. Mahi denied carrying out the attack, but it was clear to the jury, through the evidence put forward at trial, that he was responsible. Our investigators work closely with the prison to make sure that evidence of any criminal activity is captured early and those responsible are brought before the court. This result means that Mahi will be behind bars for a significant period of time and not out on the streets.”

The case underscores the challenges of maintaining order within correctional facilities and the collaboration between prison staff and law enforcement in addressing internal crimes. Sources: Hampshire Chronicle, Hampshire Constabulary.
