Full Description

Simon Mark Knowles, a 52-year-old former primary school teacher from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, who later resided in Bridlington, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years' imprisonment at York Crown Court after pleading guilty to 24 charges related to child sexual exploitation.

The offences, which occurred between 2009 and his arrest in April 2012, involved Knowles secretly filming students at the North Yorkshire school where he taught as they changed for swimming lessons. Police described the acts as a profound betrayal of trust, with Knowles using covert methods to capture indecent images of children as young as three. Investigations by North Yorkshire Police revealed 19,541 indecent photographs and 174 videos of children on his computer, alongside evidence that he had distributed 147 such images online, some classified at the highest level of seriousness.

Detective Sergeant Mark Jackson of North Yorkshire Police stated: 'On the face of it, Simon Knowles was a well-liked teacher who had the respect of his colleagues and aspired to be an assistant head teacher. In reality, he was a calculating and deceitful man who completely abused his position of trust for his own sexual gratification. The level of betrayal, falseness and dishonesty he has displayed over a number of years is rarely seen.' Jackson further highlighted Knowles' lack of remorse and the twisted nature of his fantasies, noting that 'he filmed innocent children while they were getting changed, using covert methods which highlights the lengths he was prepared to go to indulge his twisted fantasies.'

The charges against Knowles included making indecent images of children, possessing indecent images of children, distributing indecent images of children, and recording a person doing a private act. Following his sentencing, Knowles was required to register as a sex offender and was banned from working with children. North Yorkshire County Council issued a statement affirming their full cooperation with the police and emphasising child protection as their highest priority, with all proper procedures followed in employing staff.

The case, reported by The Independent on 23 April 2013, underscores the hidden dangers posed by individuals in positions of authority over children, with Knowles' actions devastating his family, colleagues, the school community, and the victims involved.
