Offence Summary

Kyran Smith broke into a woman's hotel room in Maidenhead by deception and sexually assaulted her while she slept. He was convicted and sentenced to seven years and six months' imprisonment.

Full Description

In December 2022, Kyran Smith, a 29-year-old man from London Road, Staines, attended a party alongside the victim, a woman now in her thirties, and several others. Following the event, the group proceeded to a hotel in Maidenhead to stay the night.

Around 2am, as the victim and others retired to their individual rooms, Smith approached the hotel reception and, through deception, obtained the key to the victim's room. He entered her room uninvited while she was asleep and carried out a sexual assault upon her in her bed.

The victim awoke during the assault, shouted at Smith to leave, and he complied after dressing himself. Smith then returned the room key to reception and went to his own room. The following morning, the victim reported the incident to hotel staff and her acquaintances.

Smith was subsequently arrested and investigated by Thames Valley Police. After a four-day trial at Reading Crown Court on 11 November 2025, he was found guilty of one count each of trespass with intent to commit a relevant sexual offence and sexual assault. On 23 January 2026, at the same court, Smith was sentenced to seven years and six months' imprisonment.

Detective Constable Arshid Ali, the investigating officer from Thames Valley Police, commented on the case: 'I welcome the sentencing which reflects the seriousness of the offence and the dangerous nature of the defendant.' The force emphasised its commitment to treating sexual offences with utmost seriousness, particularly those against women under the national Violence Against Women and Girls framework.
