Full Description

A 22-year-old man from Barrow-in-Furness has avoided immediate imprisonment following his involvement in an online child sex sting operation conducted by police. Marshall Mullen, residing on Rawlinson Street, was sentenced at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on 14 October 2024 for a series of attempted online child sex offences. The case highlights the dangers of online grooming and the proactive measures taken by law enforcement to protect vulnerable children.

The offences occurred between 7 December and 10 December 2024, when Mullen engaged in explicit online communications with an individual he believed to be a girl aged 13 to 15. Unbeknownst to him, the 'girl' was a police decoy officer. Mullen pleaded guilty to attempting to cause or incite a child aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity, attempting to cause a child aged 13 to 15 to watch or look at an image of sexual activity, and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. These actions took place in Barrow, Cumbria, and were uncovered through a targeted police operation aimed at identifying potential predators online.

During the court hearing, magistrates determined that the offences were of such seriousness that only a custodial sentence could be justified. However, considering Mullen's young age, lack of maturity, and realistic prospect of rehabilitation within the community, they opted to suspend a 12-month prison sentence for two years. The court imposed additional requirements, including 20 days of rehabilitation activity, a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and notification requirements under the Sex Offenders Register. Mullen was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £187 victim surcharge.

Probation services supported the suspended sentence, noting that Mullen's compliance with rehabilitation agencies would benefit both himself and wider society. The case was reported by The Mail, with court reporting by Alec Whitaker, and underscores the ongoing efforts by Cumbria Police to combat online child sexual exploitation through decoy operations.
