Ivan Keeling, a 71-year-old resident of Cheadle, Staffordshire, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison following his conviction for a series of serious sexual offences against a young schoolgirl. The case, heard at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, revealed a prolonged campaign of grooming and abuse that spanned eight years, leaving the victim psychologically scarred.
According to details presented in court, Keeling began by building a relationship with the vulnerable child, providing her with money, cigarettes, alcohol, and chocolates to gain her trust. This grooming process enabled him to perpetrate sexual assaults and rapes, exploiting her over an extended period. The offences included sexual assault of a child under 13, rape of a child under 13, and two counts of sexual activity with a child. Despite denying all charges, Keeling was found guilty by a jury after a trial concluded in April 2018.
During the sentencing, Judge David Fletcher described the offences as a 'catalogue of the most serious sexual offences against a child,' emphasising the appalling nature of Keeling's behaviour. He stated: 'You have been convicted of a catalogue of the most serious sexual offences against a child. There is no doubt whatsoever, having heard the evidence, that you commenced a campaign of sexual abuse against her. You behaved in a way which was, quite frankly, appalling.' The judge highlighted how Keeling provided items the girl wanted 'but all at a price – that she satisfied your sexual predilections for many years.' He further noted Keeling's complete denial of responsibility throughout the trial, which made it clear to the court and jury that this was a sustained campaign of sexual behaviour towards a vulnerable child.
Mitigating on behalf of Keeling, Elizabeth Power acknowledged the difficulty in defending such convictions, saying: 'It is difficult to find words to mitigate for such offences which he has now been convicted of. The jury accepted what the complainant said. On her evidence it was a sustained and prolonged number of offences over some time.' In addition to the custodial sentence, Judge Fletcher placed Keeling on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.
The case was reported by Stoke-on-Trent Live on 26 May 2018, under the headline 'Paedophile jailed for 16 years after raping and sexually abusing schoolgirl.' It underscores the long-term impact of child sexual exploitation and the judicial response to such heinous crimes in the Staffordshire area.
