Offence Summary

Jomo Mathurine, a gynaecologist, secretly filmed himself having sex with a student nurse using glasses equipped with a hidden camera and threatened to share the video unless she complied with his demands.

Full Description

Jomo Mathurine, a 49-year-old consultant gynaecologist at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for voyeurism after secretly recording sexual encounters with a student nurse using a hidden camera concealed in his glasses.

The court heard that Mathurine began a secret sexual relationship with the victim, a placement student, in 2016. During this time, he surreptitiously filmed a 40-minute sex video in her Reading flat without her knowledge. In October 2018, the student confronted him about the recording after becoming aware of it. Mathurine responded by threatening to share the video and to report her for assistance he had provided with her degree work, effectively blackmailing her to maintain silence.

Prosecutor Ian Hope detailed how Mathurine, who resided in Twinflower, Milton Keynes, had also filmed other members of hospital staff. When questioned about his actions, Mathurine callously remarked, 'in life you have to take risks'. Following his arrest, detectives discovered 15 still images and 96 video clips of the victim in his possession, confirming the extent of his voyeuristic behaviour.

At Reading Crown Court, Judge Sarah Campbell described Mathurine as having 'revealed a dark and devious side' to his character. She emphasised the betrayal of trust, stating he had 'seriously let down the profession' and would 'no doubt be a concern to anyone treated by you in the past'. Mathurine pleaded guilty to three counts of voyeurism, with two charges of stalking and assault left on file. He was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.

The case was handled under the jurisdiction of Thames Valley Police, highlighting the serious breach of professional ethics in a medical setting. This incident underscores the hidden dangers posed by individuals in positions of authority within healthcare.
