Full Description

Edward Sheriff, a 77-year-old man from Grimsby, was sentenced to 22 years in prison at Grimsby Crown Court following a seven-day trial where he was convicted on all counts of non-recent sexual offences against three children.

The investigation began in 2022 when Humberside Police received reports from three individuals who alleged they had been subjected to sexual abuse by Sheriff. He was arrested in June 2022 and interviewed by detectives, during which he denied any sexual interest in children. The offences, which occurred over more than four decades, included one count of rape of a child under 13, four counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, two counts of sexual assault of a child under 16, eight counts of indecent assault, three counts of gross indecency with a child, and one count of exposure.

Detective Sergeant Chris Clarke from Humberside Police's Domestic Abuse Investigation Team, who led the case, described Sheriff's actions as utterly deplorable, stating: “Sheriff’s actions are utterly deplorable, a calculated and prolonged abuse of trust against innocent and vulnerable children, spanning more than four decades. He deliberately manipulated, threatened, and emotionally abused his victims to silence them, committing sustained abuse that has caused unimaginable harm.” Clarke commended the victims for their bravery in coming forward and enduring the court process, noting that the verdict offered some reassurance that Sheriff could no longer harm others.

The case was prosecuted at Grimsby Crown Court, with the jury returning guilty verdicts on all charges. Humberside Police emphasised their commitment to investigating such reports seriously, regardless of when the offences occurred.
