Full Description

A convicted sex offender from Kirklees has been jailed again for further serious sexual offences committed against young girls. Wiqas Mahmud, aged 44 and from Huddersfield, appeared at Leeds Crown Court on 12 June 2025, where he admitted to multiple charges including one count of rape, three counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of indecent assault. These offences took place between 2001 and 2006 in the Huddersfield area, targeting two victims who were just 13 and 14 years old at the time the abuse began.

Mahmud was already serving a 19-year prison sentence for previous sexual offences against young girls in Kirklees, for which he was convicted in 2018. This latest conviction marks his third sentencing for such crimes, with an additional six years and three months imposed in April 2023 for related offences. The court ordered that the new sentence of five years and four months be served consecutively after the completion of his current term, resulting in a total of more than 24 years behind bars. The case was reported to police in 2020 and investigated as part of Kirklees Police's ongoing specialist inquiries into non-recent child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Detective Chief Inspector Oliver Coates of Kirklees District Police described Mahmud as 'an absolute danger to young females' in a statement released by West Yorkshire Police. He emphasised the severity of the offences, stating: 'Mahmud is without doubt an absolute danger to young females who has now been convicted three times and sentenced to more than 24 years in prison.' Coates also praised the courage of the victims, noting: 'Sexual predators such as Mahmud have only been snared through the courage of victims coming forward and I want to thank both women in this case. By reporting this horrendous abuse and supporting the trial process, they and other women in these cases, have played a significant role in making communities safer by ensuring men such as Mahmud are off our streets.'

The investigation was conducted by West Yorkshire Police, highlighting their commitment to pursuing justice for historical sexual abuse cases. This sentencing underscores the ongoing efforts to hold perpetrators accountable, no matter how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
