On May 10, 2023, Keanu Vella, a 30-year-old registered sex offender from Woodford Green, arranged for a woman providing escort services to visit his home on Maldon Walk. What began as an agreed appointment escalated into a violent ordeal when the session ended. Vella held the victim against her will, falsely imprisoning her, and raped her at knifepoint, demonstrating a clear disregard for the law and public safety.
The incident came to light after a passer-by discovered the distressed victim outside Vella's address and alerted the authorities. The Metropolitan Police swiftly responded, arresting Vella on the same day. During the investigation, officers uncovered that Vella had relocated to the Maldon Walk property without notifying his offender management officer, in violation of his existing sex offender registration requirements. This breach underscored his non-compliance with court-ordered conditions designed to monitor and mitigate risks to the community.
Vella was charged on May 12, 2023, and remanded in custody. He appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on March 12, 2024, where he pleaded guilty to rape and false imprisonment. Separately, he admitted to failing to comply with notification requirements. The sentencing hearing took place on July 11, 2024, at the same court, resulting in a substantial custodial term reflecting the severity of his crimes.
For failing to comply with notification requirements: 40 weeks' imprisonment. For false imprisonment: 4 years' imprisonment. For rape: 12 years and 9 months' imprisonment, with an extended licence period of 18 years and 9 months. In total, Vella received over 12 years in prison and is subject to an indefinite Registered Sex Offender notification requirement. Detective Constable Jessica Stephens of the Metropolitan Police commented on the case, stating: 'Keanu Vella is a registered sex offender who is a clear danger to women. He has demonstrated that he is unable to comply with the court ordered notifications that allow him his freedom, and it is right that he will now be in a place where he no longer poses a threat to women and girls. I hope that the sentence handed down encourages other victims of sex offences to come forward.' PC Emma Porter added: 'We are grateful to the victim in this case. She has shown strength, courage and patience throughout the court process. Now that Vella is behind bars it is my sincere hope that she can put his abhorrent actions behind her and move forward with her life.'
The case, reported by the East London and West Essex Guardian Series on July 13, 2024, highlights the ongoing challenges in managing registered sex offenders and the importance of vigilant policing. Images provided by the Metropolitan Police depict Vella, emphasising the gravity of his offences.
