Offence Summary

Mark Anthony Cain carried out a prolonged campaign of rape against a primary-school-aged boy, including forcing the victim to watch sexual acts and view pornographic material, leading to his conviction on four counts of raping a child under 13.

Full Description

Mark Anthony Cain, a 38-year-old warehouse worker from Newport, has been sentenced to an extended 23-year term as a dangerous offender following his conviction for a series of child sex offences. The abuse, which took place over a prolonged period in the Vale of Glamorgan, involved at least 22 separate rapes against a primary-school-aged boy, as well as causing the child to watch a sexual act and forcing him to look at pornographic magazines and films.

The case came to light years after the incidents when the victim made disclosures during a routine medical appointment. Cain was convicted at Cardiff Crown Court on four counts of raping a child under 13. In a victim impact statement read to the court, the survivor described how he had suppressed the memories for many years but always felt as though people could 'see through me'. He explained that the abuse left a 'hole in the person' he was as an adult, robbing him of some of his masculinity, yet he expressed pride in reporting the crimes and pursuing justice, which had fostered a healthier mindset.

Judge Celia Hughes addressed Cain directly, stating that he had 'regularly abused and degraded [the victim] at your will' through 'the calculating actions of a predatory man'. She determined that Cain posed a significant risk to the public, justifying the extended sentence to ensure protection. As Cain was led away, he shouted abuse from the dock, dismissing the case against him as 'bullsh*t'.

The sentence comprises 20 years in custody followed by a three-year extended licence period, with Cain required to serve two-thirds of the custodial term before any possibility of release, subject to Parole Board approval. He will remain on the sex offenders' register for life and is subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order. Cain's criminal history includes eight previous convictions for 22 offences, notably indecent assault of a girl and sexual assault of a woman, alongside robbery.

Detective Constable Ameila Lewis of South Wales Police commended the victim's 'immense bravery' in the aftermath of the sentencing, noting that the outcome should provide some comfort and has helped safeguard the wider public. The case underscores the long-term impacts of child sexual abuse and the importance of victim disclosures in bringing perpetrators to justice, as reported by Wales Updates.
