Full Description

Steven Hentschel, a 54-year-old man from Yeovil, Somerset, was convicted at Taunton Crown Court of one count of sexual assault against a 15-year-old female. The incident, which occurred several years prior to the trial, took place in Yeovil and involved Hentschel complimenting the victim by telling her she was beautiful before kissing her on the lips without consent.

The case proceeded to trial earlier in the year at Taunton Crown Court, sitting at North Somerset Courthouse. Hentschel had initially pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault. Following the presentation of evidence to the jury, he was found guilty on one count and not guilty on the second. He was released on bail pending the sentencing hearing.

On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, Hentschel was sentenced for his offence. The court imposed a four-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months. In addition, he was ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and a 20-day rehabilitation requirement. A five-year restraining order was also issued to protect the victim, and Hentschel was required to register as a sex offender for seven years.

DC Emma Whatley, the officer in charge of the investigation, commented on the case, stating: “We are grateful to the victim, her family and everybody who supported our investigation by providing vital information. That courage to come forward has enabled us to achieve this conviction. The victim knew the defendant before this incident; his actions violated the trust she placed in him, which is why we welcome the five-year restraining order being issued.” The conviction underscores the seriousness with which the courts treat breaches of trust involving minors in sexual assault cases.
