Offence Summary

Michael Southward, a former Sellafield worker, was exposed by an undercover police sting for his sexual interest in children, including encouraging sexual interference with an 11-year-old girl and possessing indecent images. He received a three-year community order instead of custody.

Full Description

Michael Southward, a 57-year-old former worker at the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court for offences revealing his deep-seated sexual interest in the abuse of young children. The case came to light through an undercover police sting operation in 2022, during which Southward engaged in explicit online communications believing he was interacting with a woman who had access to her 11-year-old niece.

The offences began when Southward visited a website and posted a message seeking to communicate with 'girls of any age.' An undercover officer, posing as the woman, contacted him, leading to four days of graphic exchanges where Southward encouraged her to sexually touch the child. Judge Nicholas Barker remarked during sentencing, 'It was clear that this was something you intended to happen,' highlighting the defendant's rapid escalation to sexual topics and use of explicit language.

Further investigation uncovered a collection of 35 indecent child images on Southward's devices, including ten Category A images—the most severe classification—and prohibited cartoon images of children. The images depicted abuse of very young victims, such as a four-year-old. Southward also admitted to two counts of attempting to sexually communicate with children online, including one as young as 11. All offences occurred in 2022, with Southward residing at Yewbarrow Close in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

In mitigation, defence barrister Marion Weir explained that Southward, a man of previous good character, had faced personal hardships including a relationship breakdown, the sudden death of his mother, and the loss of his brother. These factors, combined with alcohol use that left him 'disinhibited,' contributed to his actions. Weir noted that Southward had abstained from alcohol since his arrest four years prior, expressed remorse, and posed no active risk according to a pre-sentence report.

Judge Barker acknowledged Southward's 'deep-seated and deviant interest in the sexual abuse of very young children' but opted for an 'extraordinary course' of a three-year community order, citing the defendant's rehabilitation prospects, lack of further offending, and good character. The order included 250 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity days. Additionally, Southward was placed on the Sex Offender Register for five years and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration. The case was reported by News and Star (nwemail.co.uk), with coverage by chief reporter Phil Coleman.
