Offence Summary

Phillip Magson was sentenced to 21 years in prison plus 8 years on extended licence for multiple sexual offences against children under 13, including assault by penetration and causing or inciting sexual activity.

Full Description

Phillip Magson, a 61-year-old man of no fixed abode, has been sentenced to a substantial term of imprisonment following his conviction for serious sexual offences against children. At Teesside Crown Court, Magson was found guilty on two counts of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration, two counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13. The court categorised him as a dangerous offender, resulting in a sentence of 21 years in prison with an additional 8 years on extended licence to protect the public from further harm.

This is not Magson's first brush with the law for such crimes. In the early 1980s, while serving as a police officer, he was previously convicted of sexual offences against children. Those off-duty crimes came to light, leading to his dismissal from the force. The recent offences demonstrate a pattern of predatory behaviour targeting vulnerable children, causing profound and lasting damage to his victims and their families.

Investigating officer DC Carl Middleton from the Public Protection Unit of Cleveland Police commented on the severity of the case: 'The actions of Magson are unforgivable and the sentence handed to him today highlights the severity of the crimes he has committed. Magson targeted children and the damage he has caused to the victims and their families is inexcusable.' Middleton also praised the courage of the victims and their families throughout the investigation and court process, noting that 'No child should have to provide evidence at court after becoming victim to such a cruel crime. Magson deserves to spend a significant time in prison as a result of what he has done.'

The sentencing took place on 28 April 2023, underscoring Cleveland Police's commitment to pursuing and prosecuting individuals who commit child sex offences. This case serves as a stark reminder of the long-term consequences for those who exploit and harm children, with the extended licence period ensuring ongoing monitoring post-release.
