Offence Summary

Tarek Elshendi, a 35-year-old Egyptian man, pleaded guilty to seven child sex offences after being caught in a vigilante paedophile sting operation in Essex, where he intended to meet and sexually abuse an underage girl decoy.

Full Description

Tarek Elshendi, a 35-year-old Egyptian national residing in Birmingham, was arrested following a vigilante paedophile hunter sting in Essex. The incident unfolded when Elshendi travelled from his home in Moseley Road, Birmingham, to Harlow, intending to meet what he believed was an underage girl for sexual purposes. However, the 'girl' was a decoy set up by vigilante groups, who confronted him upon arrival and live-streamed the encounter on Facebook before alerting the police.

At Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday, January 6, 2025, prosecutor Philippa Page detailed how Elshendi had engaged in a series of online communications aimed at grooming and sexually exploiting children. Over a two-and-a-half-week period in August 2024, he pleaded guilty to four counts of attempting sexual communication with a person under the age of 16, each involving a different decoy child profile. These communications occurred via WhatsApp and Facebook, where he sent explicit sexual messages. Additionally, Elshendi admitted to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and two charges of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence.

Judge Richard Conley, with the aid of an Arabic interpreter, addressed Elshendi directly during the hearing, stating: 'You have admitted now seven offences, all relating to sexual misbehaviour with children. These are serious matters, as I’m sure you understand. It seems to me that a substantial term of imprisonment is pretty much inevitable in your case.' The judge remanded Elshendi in custody pending sentencing, scheduled for February 24, 2025, and ordered a probation pre-sentence report to assess the risk of further offences and whether he should be classified as a dangerous offender.

Mitigating barrister Jessica Peck informed the court that Elshendi, who faces deportation to Egypt after serving 30% of any prison sentence, does not contest the repatriation and wishes to return home as soon as possible. Page highlighted concerns raised by the case, noting: 'There are multiple intended victims. When the arrest is live streamed on Facebook, there is a flood of other vigilante groups who report his activities – so of course, that must give rise to serious concerns.' The case was reported exclusively by Charles Thomson, Crime & Investigations Reporter for Essex Uncovered, based on proceedings at Basildon Crown Court.
