Offence Summary

Stuart O’Boyle, a convicted sex offender from Caernarfon, was jailed for failing to disclose his status to a new partner and using a fake name, breaching his sex offenders register notification requirements.

Full Description

Stuart O’Boyle, 35, from Chapel Street in Caernarfon, Wales, was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment at Caernarfon Crown Court on July 25, 2024, after admitting two counts of failing to comply with his sex offenders register notification requirements.

O’Boyle had a prior conviction in August 2016 for offences including sexual activity with a child, which resulted in him being placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years. Despite these requirements, in February 2024, he began a relationship with a woman who has a young daughter. He concealed his conviction and notification obligations from her, falsely introducing himself as Stuart Jones. O’Boyle frequently stayed overnight at the woman’s home, which constituted breaches of the register rules regarding his residence and associations.

The deception came to light in May 2024 when a friend of the woman expressed concerns about O’Boyle and revealed his true identity. Shocked by the discovery that he was a registered sex offender, the woman promptly contacted North Wales Police. Prosecutor Richard Edwards outlined the details during the court proceedings, emphasising the seriousness of O’Boyle’s deliberate non-compliance.

Defence representative Joshua Gorst highlighted O’Boyle’s history of 14 previous convictions for 26 offences and his struggles with mental health issues, including psychosis that causes him to hear voices. Gorst noted that the woman’s daughter had suffered no harm from O’Boyle and mentioned his recent broken wrist from a psychotic episode, as well as his inability to access medication while in custody. O’Boyle has been working as a cleaner in prison and expressed a desire to reconnect with his teenage daughter, whom he has not seen since 2016.

Sentencing Judge Nicola Jones described O’Boyle’s actions as a deliberate failure to adhere to the notification requirements, underscoring the importance of such measures for public protection. The case was reported by the North Wales Chronicle, with coverage by reporter Matthew Chandler.
