Offence Summary

Taxi driver Carl Morgan Donnelly was jailed for three counts of indecent assault on a 13-year-old girl around 20 years ago. He was sentenced to six years in prison for the sexual offences.

Full Description

Carl Morgan Donnelly, a 63-year-old taxi driver from The Ferns in Egremont, Cumbria, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court alongside two other men for sexually abusing a girl in separate incidents dating back 20 years. Donnelly was found guilty of three charges of indecent assault against the victim when she was 13 years old. The offences were reported to authorities only recently, after the victim recognised them as abuse following years of silence.

In her victim impact statement, read by a detective during the hearing which she attended, the woman described the devastating consequences: "My whole life has been tainted by their actions. I feel they have robbed me of the remaining years of my childhood, of my education and possible future." Her testimony highlighted the enduring harm inflicted by Donnelly's repeated assaults.

Recorder Richard Archer sentenced Donnelly to six years' custody, reflecting the severity of the multiple offences. Donnelly must also register as a sex offender and is barred from contact with children and vulnerable adults. The prosecution relied on evidence from Cumbria Police, which was instrumental in securing the convictions in this historical case.

The court proceedings addressed unconnected abuses by the three men against the same victim, demonstrating the justice system's response to long-suppressed reports of child sexual exploitation. Donnelly's role as a taxi driver at the time may have facilitated access to the young victim, adding to the breach of safety expected from such positions.
