A paedophile from Basildon has been sentenced to four years in prison for historic sexual offences against a child, following the victim's courageous decision to speak out years after the abuse occurred.
Emyln Hann, 31, of Goldings Crescent, Basildon, appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday, where he was jailed for his admitted crimes of child rape and sexual assault of a child. The offences, which took place in the past, were uncovered when the victim, during discussions about growing up, confided in their parent. The parent contacted the police some years later, prompted by the revelation. There had been a fear of reprisal that delayed reporting to authorities.
Prosecutor Jamie Sawyer outlined the case, noting the significant impact on the victim. 'The child told its parent when having discussions about growing up and the parent contacted the police some years later,' Sawyer said. 'There was a fear about telling authorities due to concern about reprisal.'
The court heard that Hann had attempted to take his own life following the incidents and had also self-harmed. In mitigation, David Burgess argued that Hann expressed substantial remorse and wished to resume his life. Burgess highlighted Hann's diabetic condition, mentioning that in the cells, his medication had been held ransom, adding to his difficulties.
Judge Andrew Hurst, during sentencing, acknowledged the profound suffering endured by the victim, who developed mental health issues, contemplated suicide, and experienced diminished trust, self-worth, and social restrictions as a result of the abuse. 'The victim clearly suffered and has some form of mental health issues. They have contemplated suicide and their trust has been diminished as is their self-worth. They are socially restricted,' the judge stated. He also recognised Hann's own suffering from guilt, accepting his remorse, and noted that there had been no further offending for many years. The case surfaced as the mental health of both the victim and defendant began to deteriorate.
The sentencing reflects the severity of the historic child abuse, with Essex Police involved in the investigation, as indicated by the imagery and reporting from the local news outlet.
