Full Description

Thomas Green, a 28-year-old resident of North Staffordshire, was sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for committing serious sexual offences against a child. The court heard that Green raped his victim, a schoolgirl under the age of 16, and subsequently threatened to kill her if she disclosed the abuse to anyone. Despite the threats, the victim confided in her mother, prompting the involvement of the police.

Green initially denied the allegations but pleaded guilty to two charges of rape of a child under 16, along with two additional offences, on 3 November 2025—the day his trial was scheduled to begin. This plea spared the victim from the ordeal of testifying in court. In mitigation, Anis Ali, representing Green, described him as 'relatively immature and troubled' and emphasised that his expressions of remorse were genuine. Ali noted Green's recognition of the profound impact on the victim, stating, 'He recognises the real effect it had upon her. There is very real embarrassment and shame.' Ali further argued that Green's prospects for rehabilitation were 'relatively positive' and submitted that there was 'nothing to indicate... he is dangerous'.

However, Judge Graeme Smith rejected this assessment, concluding that Green met the criteria for dangerousness. The judge accepted Green's remorse but highlighted the pre-sentence report's findings that he posed a high risk of causing serious harm to children, requiring significant intervention to mitigate that risk. Judge Smith stated, 'The pre-sentence report concludes you are a high risk of causing serious harm to children. A significant amount of work needs to be undertaken to reduce the risk. I conclude you meet the test for dangerousness.'

Green received an extended sentence of 17 years, comprising 14 years in custody and a three-year extended licence period. He must serve two-thirds of the custodial term before being eligible for release. Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life and subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The case was reported by Stoke-on-Trent Live, with proceedings occurring at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in Staffordshire, England.
