Offence Summary

Andrew Gordon Chapman was convicted of serious sexual crimes against two young girls, including abuse of one aged just two or three, and jailed for 19 years after his phone revealed despicable WhatsApp chats boasting about the offences.

Full Description

A Carlisle man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for committing grotesque sexual crimes against children, which came to light following an intervention by paedophile hunters. Andrew Gordon Chapman, aged 50 and an HGV driver from Warwick Square, Carlisle, was door-stepped at his home by vigilantes who suspected his involvement in child sexual abuse. The group contacted the police, leading to Chapman's immediate arrest.

Upon seizure, Chapman's phone underwent forensic analysis at Carlisle Crown Court, uncovering 'despicable and repulsive' WhatsApp conversations where he discussed the serious sexual abuse of children and boasted about his actions against two young victims. One of the girls was just two or three years old at the time the crimes were committed. The court heard that Chapman had carried out sexual offences against both girls and had encouraged them not to disclose the abuse.

Chapman denied all allegations, pleading not guilty to seven charges, and stood trial earlier in the week. However, a jury unanimously convicted him on all counts. During the sentencing hearing, impact statements from the victims were read, detailing the profound and lasting effects of Chapman's actions. Judge Nicholas Barker described the statements as 'heart-wrenching' and remarked, 'You have ripped up their childhood. You have left a stain and a scar upon them that will be there for ever more.' He labelled the crimes as 'grotesque' and imposed the lengthy sentence, deeming Chapman an 'offender of particular concern' despite having no prior convictions.

In addition to the 19-year custodial term, Chapman faces an extended one-year licence period post-release, must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence in custody, and will only be considered for release if approved by a parole board as safe. He is required to sign the sex offenders' register indefinitely and comply with a strict sexual harm prevention order for life. The case was heard at Carlisle Crown Court, with reporting from ITV News Border on 15 October 2021.
