Full Description

James Oliver, a 31-year-old man from Bradford, West Yorkshire, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court for attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. The case stemmed from his online interactions in July 2021 with an undercover police operative who had created a profile posing as a 12-year-old girl.

Prosecutor Vincent Blake-Barnard outlined how Oliver initiated contact with the profile and continued messaging despite learning the supposed age of the girl. Oliver remarked that he was 'old enough to be your dad' but proceeded to discuss sexually dominating a girl and offered to buy her underwear that her mother would not approve of. He sent sexual photographs of himself and suggested specific poses for the girl to replicate in photographs of herself.

West Yorkshire Police were alerted to Oliver's activity by colleagues in the West Midlands during the summer of 2021. He was arrested in October 2021 and claimed during questioning that he believed the profile belonged to an 18-year-old and that his actions were mere role-playing. Oliver, residing at Lime Vale Way in Bradford, had no previous convictions at the time.

Defending barrister Camille Morland highlighted Oliver's social isolation and solitary living situation at the time of the offence. Recorder Patrick Palmer, presiding over the case, acknowledged the seriousness of the offending but noted there had been no further incidents in the subsequent two years. The judge imposed an 18-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years, along with 250 hours of unpaid community work, attendance on an accredited programme, and 30 days of rehabilitation activity requirements.

As a consequence of his conviction under the charge of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, Oliver was required to register as a sex offender for 10 years and abide by a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his contact with children under 16. Recorder Palmer warned, 'This is your one chance. You won’t get it again.'
