Offence Summary

Paedophile ex-soldier David Crookes was sentenced to 13 years for arranging the sexual abuse of children in the Philippines and possessing indecent images.

Full Description

David Crookes, a paedophile and former soldier from Canvey Island, was sentenced to 13 years in prison at Southend Crown Court in April 2025 after admitting to arranging for children to be sexually abused for his entertainment in the Philippines. The lorry driver was caught when police inspected his phone during a stop while driving cargo to Ireland, revealing extensive evidence of his crimes.

Crookes had issued explicit instructions to a mother in the Philippines who sexually assaulted her own children in a series of videos produced for him. Seized devices contained numerous indecent images, including footage of the contact engaging in bestiality at Crookes’ behest. Over three years, the pair exchanged 180,000 messages, demonstrating the depth of Crookes’ involvement in child sexual exploitation. After his initial court appearance, Crookes repeatedly failed to attend sentencing hearings while on bail, but was eventually brought to justice.

The case, covered by The Echo as part of its 2025 south Essex courts review, highlighted the international scope of Crookes’ offences and the role of digital evidence in securing his conviction. Prosecutor details emphasised the “truly shocking” nature of the abuse orchestrated remotely, leading to a significant custodial sentence to deter such exploitation.
