Offence Summary

Huan Yu was jailed for possessing and making over 4,500 indecent images of children, marking his second conviction for such offences within a decade.

Full Description

A Thornaby man, Huan Yu, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after disturbing images of child abuse were discovered on his computer for the second time in 10 years. The 41-year-old from Westbury Street, Thornaby, pleaded guilty to 16 charges of making and one charge of possessing indecent photographs of children at Teesside Crown Court.

This conviction follows a previous offence in 2003, when Yu received a six-month jail sentence for 29 similar charges and was subsequently registered as a sex offender for seven years. On June 18, 2023, a police officer from the public protection unit conducted a routine visit to his home. During the inspection of Yu’s computer, an image of a girl aged 10 to 13 was found, leading to the device's seizure.

Forensic examination by authorities revealed a collection of at least 4,500 images, with the majority classified at the least serious level under the law, and 52 images falling into more severe categories. The computer's browsing history indicated repeated visits to websites hosting child abuse material. In his police interview, Yu initially claimed the images originated from adult pornography sites, but prosecutor Richard Parsell argued that the volume and frequency of downloads demonstrated active searching for child exploitation content. Yu provided no response when confronted with this evidence.

Defending barrister Brian Russell acknowledged the difficulty in arguing for a community penalty given the circumstances. Judge Howard Crowson imposed a 12-month custodial sentence on Yu, along with an indefinite sexual offences prevention order. This order prohibits unsupervised contact with children under 16 and regulates his use of computers and smartphones. Additionally, Yu will remain on the sex offenders’ register for the next 10 years.

The case was reported by Teesside Live, with coverage by local democracy reporter Gareth Lightfoot, highlighting the ongoing efforts of Cleveland Police's public protection unit in monitoring registered offenders.
