Full Description

A married couple from Deal, Kent, have been sentenced to over 50 years in prison for committing a series of horrific sexual offences against four young girls over several decades. Paul Higginson, aged 72, and his wife Pamela Higginson, aged 73, were arrested in 2016 following a report from one of their victims. The case, investigated by Kent Police, culminated in a trial at Canterbury Crown Court, where the couple was found guilty of grave child sex offences.

Pamela Higginson, aged 73, was charged with aiding and abetting rape and causing suffering to a child, with her involvement linked to offences in the 1980s. These crimes were part of a broader pattern of abuse perpetrated alongside her husband against four girls, who suffered prolonged trauma as a result. The investigation revealed the couple's complicity in exploiting vulnerable children over an extended period.

Following the trial, Pamela Higginson received a 22-year custodial sentence. Like her husband, she must serve two-thirds of her term before eligibility for parole. The combined sentences underscore the court's recognition of the profound harm inflicted on the victims.

Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Smith of Kent Police commended the bravery of the victims and the thorough investigation by his team. In a statement, he said: "The offences carried out by this couple were horrific and will have a long-lasting impact on their victims. I hope the careful investigation carried out by my officers, and the long sentences now handed down, give the victims some sense that justice has been done." He urged anyone who has suffered similar abuse to come forward, emphasising the police's commitment to protecting victims and prosecuting perpetrators.

The case highlights the importance of victim support during legal proceedings. One of the victims was assisted by Luna, a seven-year-old Siberian husky therapy dog provided through Kent Police's volunteer programme. Luna's presence helped the victim remain calm while giving evidence over the six-week trial. PC Martyn Tulk, who oversees volunteers in the Special Constabulary, noted the invaluable role of such therapy dogs in reducing stress and providing comfort in difficult situations.
