Full Description

Lee Sharp, a 42-year-old man from Easterly Terrace, Sticklepath, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for a series of sexual offences against a woman he abused both as a teenager and later as an adult. The case, heard at Exeter Crown Court, highlighted the abhorrent nature of Sharp's actions, which included sexual activity with a child, coercive and controlling behaviour, and rape. Following a trial in August 2024, Sharp was found guilty by a jury despite denying the charges throughout the proceedings.

The court was told that Sharp first sexually abused the victim when she was a teenager, fully aware that she was under the age of consent. He instructed her to remain silent about the abuse, perpetuating a pattern of control that continued into her adulthood. As an adult, the victim endured rape at Sharp's hands, alongside physical and emotional abuse. Sharp restrained her, spat in her face, and demeaned her with insults such as 'scum of the earth' and 'dog', claiming no one would want her. On one disturbing occasion, he sent her a message stating, 'you dog, you're going to die for this'. Abusive messages like these were presented as evidence during the trial, underscoring the coercive nature of his behaviour.

Sentencing occurred on 30 October 2024 at Exeter Crown Court, where the judge imposed a 19-year custodial term, along with six years on extended licence and a restraining order to protect the victim. The prosecution detailed how Sharp's actions spanned years, involving repeated abuse that left lasting impacts. Investigating officer Sergeant Tina Dalton of Devon and Cornwall Police commended the victim's courage in coming forward, stating, 'Sharp abused her repeatedly and behaved in an abhorrent way.' She emphasised the police's commitment to supporting victims, noting, 'No matter what time has passed, or the circumstances, we will listen, and you will be heard.'

This case, reported by ITV News West Country, serves as a stark reminder of the long-term effects of sexual exploitation and the importance of reporting such crimes. Sharp's conviction followed a thorough investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police, bringing justice after years of suffering for the victim.
