Offence Summary

Louis Rumis admitted to possessing over 70,000 indecent images of children, including serious Category A material involving a six-month-old infant, and continued downloading the images even after police searches of his home.

Full Description

Louis Rumis, an 82-year-old man from the New Forest area, appeared in court after pleading guilty to three charges of possessing indecent images of children, with the total exceeding 70,000 images across various categories.

On 11 April 2024, police conducted a Section 32 search of Rumis's home on Farmers Walk, Everton, Lymington, following suspicions of child sex abuse material. During the search, officers discovered dozens of SD cards, hard drives, and other storage devices containing the images. The collection included 4,091 Category A images—the most serious category—with 232 videos, one of which depicted a six-month-old child. Additionally, there were 10,445 Category B images and 60,787 Category C images. The sheer volume was so extensive that, as prosecuting barrister Steven Woolfe informed the court, police eventually ceased counting them all.

In his police interview in 2024, Rumis referred to the material as 'child porn' and admitted he had not paid for it. Despite the initial seizure, Rumis continued to download more images. On 19 May 2025, police returned to his property and found additional material across all three categories. In a follow-up interview, he confessed to continuing to watch the images and enjoying doing so.

Defending barrister Barry Keel noted that Rumis was of previous good character with no prior offences and had entered his guilty pleas at the earliest opportunity. Chair of the magistrates' bench, Kevin White, committed the case to Southampton Crown Court for sentencing on 31 March. Rumis was remanded on unconditional bail but required to report to his nearest police station. The case was reported by the Salisbury Journal, highlighting the ongoing issue of child sexual exploitation through digital means in the UK.
