Offence Summary

Nicholas Hodgson admitted to possessing and making indecent images of children, including category A material depicting serious abuse. He pleaded guilty to multiple charges at Harrogate Magistrates Court, with sentencing adjourned pending a pre-sentence report.

Full Description

A 43-year-old man from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, has pleaded guilty to a series of offences involving the possession and making of indecent images of children. Nicholas Hodgson, residing on Albert Road, appeared before Harrogate Magistrates Court on 20 November 2025, where he confirmed his details and entered guilty pleas to five charges covering the period from May 2024 to October 2024.

The charges encompassed a total of seven category A photographs and 14 category A moving images—the most severe classification of child abuse material—along with 23 category B still images, six category B moving images, and one category C photograph. Prosecuting, Alison Whiteley informed the court that North Yorkshire Police had attended Hodgson's address following received intelligence. Officers seized his mobile phone and conducted a forensic examination, recovering the illicit material.

Upon arrest, Hodgson claimed to police that he posed 'no risk to children'. He further disclosed the existence of a 'private safe' on his device containing additional videos, which were deliberately stored in an encrypted folder. One particularly harrowing video, lasting 10 minutes, depicted the rape of a young girl, as detailed to the magistrates. Ms Whiteley noted that some of the material appeared to have been acquired using United States dollars, suggesting possible online purchase.

Defending Hodgson, Andrew Tinning urged the magistrates to handle the case locally rather than referring it to York Crown Court, citing the gravity of the offences. He highlighted that Hodgson had provided full admissions to police, including voluntarily revealing the presence of images and videos on his phone—a cooperation not always observed in such cases. Mr Tinning stated: 'Mr Hodgson is well aware of the possibility of a custodial sentence. Full admissions were made to police. Often that is not the case, often no comment is made.' Hodgson himself acknowledged his awareness of potential imprisonment.

The court adjourned proceedings for the preparation of an all-options pre-sentence report. Hodgson is scheduled to return to Harrogate Magistrates Court on 13 February 2026 for sentencing. This case underscores ongoing efforts by North Yorkshire Police to combat child sexual exploitation through intelligence-led investigations and device forensics.
