Full Description

An Eritrean national, Amer Mohammed, who was residing as an asylum seeker in the Glenwood Hotel in Cliftonville, Kent, carried out a brutal sexual assault on a lone woman walking along Margate's seafront promenade in the early hours of August 2024.

The 24-year-old approached the victim, inviting her to a party. After they walked a short distance together, she made it clear she did not want sex. Mohammed then violently assaulted her, forcing her to the ground and committing assault by penetration with intent to commit a sexual offence. The attack also involved assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The victim bravely fought him off and escaped, flagging down a passing vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer. She was taken to Margate Police Station, where she reported the incident. Kent Police traced Mohammed through CCTV footage back to the Glenwood Hotel, leading to his arrest.

Following a 10-day trial at Canterbury Crown Court, a jury found Mohammed guilty on 9 October 2024 of assault by penetration and assault occasioning actual bodily harm with intent to commit a sexual offence. On 18 December 2025, he was sentenced to nine years in prison at the same court.

Detective Constable Chris Harvey of Kent Police commented after the hearing: 'This was a traumatic experience for the victim, and we commend the bravery she has shown throughout the trial. Thanks to her courage and the swift actions of our officers, we were able to secure a conviction and ensure justice was served for this violent, sexually motivated crime.
