Offence Summary

Thomas Blant, a serving Kent Police officer, admitted to viewing and possessing indecent images of children online. He was sentenced to a 12-month prison term suspended for two years and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Full Description

Thomas Blant, a 38-year-old police officer with Kent Police, has been sentenced for possessing indecent images of children. The offences came to light following an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA), which detected access to a website hosting child sexual abuse material from his residence in Ashford, Kent.

In January 2020, while employed as a serving officer, Blant accessed and viewed 21 indecent images of children on his laptop and mobile phone. NCA officers raided his home and discovered the images, including 17 that Blant had attempted to delete from his laptop and an additional four on an old mobile phone. The material was described as 'abhorrent' by authorities, highlighting the exploitation of vulnerable children.

Blant pleaded guilty to two charges of making illegal images of children at Maidstone Crown Court. On Wednesday, he was handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and required to register as a sex offender for 10 years. Following the sentencing, Blant was dismissed from the Kent Police force.

Det Ch Supt Jon Armory, Kent Police's head of professional standards, condemned Blant's actions, stating: "It is abhorrent that Blant has committed these offences, particularly while working as a police officer. His actions helped fuel the demand for children to be exploited which is a complete betrayal of his duty to protect the vulnerable." The case underscores the serious breach of trust by a public servant in a position of authority.

The investigation was led by the NCA, with support from Kent Police. Blant was arrested after the website access was traced to his address, leading to the seizure of his devices and subsequent forensic analysis that uncovered the illicit content.
