Full Description

James Sim, a 45-year-old man from Rutherglen in South Lanarkshire, appeared at the High Court in Glasgow where he admitted to multiple counts of child sexual abuse spanning several decades. The court heard that Sim had abused his primary victim, a boy who cannot be named for legal reasons, between 1990 and 1997 when the child was aged between eight and 13. During this period, Sim was babysitting the boy and exploited the situation to carry out the abuses.

In a particularly disturbing detail, Sim made a video recording of himself and the victim engaged in sexual acts, instructing the boy not to tell anyone about what had happened. The abuse came to light years later when the victim, now in his 20s and serving a prison sentence for his own offences against young boys, discovered the video. He estimated it had been recorded when he was 11 or 12 and described feeling 'dirty and embarrassed' upon seeing it. The victim then showed the footage to his mother, who confronted Sim, exclaiming, 'How could you do this. We trusted you.'

Sim's admissions extended beyond this case. He also confessed to abusing another boy in 1980, when that child was just seven years old. Additionally, police discovered 1,009 indecent images of children on his computer during their investigation. When interviewed by detectives, Sim chillingly admitted to the abuse of the primary victim, stating, 'I didn't think he enjoyed it, but he never said no.'

The case was heard at the High Court in Glasgow, with sentencing deferred and Sim remanded in custody pending further proceedings. This incident underscores the long-lasting impact of childhood sexual abuse, as evidenced by the victim's own subsequent criminal behaviour. The prosecuting authority involved Police Scotland, responsible for investigations in the Glasgow West area.
