Offence Summary

Mehmet Ogur, a 27-year-old Kurdish asylum seeker, was jailed for seven years after raping an 18-year-old woman in a park in Tamworth shortly after meeting her via a social media app. He was found guilty of rape and attempted rape following a trial at Stafford Crown Court.

Full Description

Mehmet Ogur, a 27-year-old Kurdish asylum seeker residing at the Holiday Inn Express in Tamworth, Staffordshire, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the rape of an 18-year-old woman. The attack occurred last summer in a park, just days after Ogur met the victim through a social media application.

According to details presented at Stafford Crown Court, Ogur forced himself upon the victim during the encounter. Following the incident, he sent her messages that constituted a 'full and complete' admission of his actions. Despite denying any wrongdoing during the trial, Ogur claimed that Google Translate had misinterpreted the content of these messages. However, the jury found him guilty of both rape and attempted rape last summer.

Judge John Edwards, presiding over the sentencing, addressed Ogur with the assistance of a Turkish interpreter in the dock. The judge emphasised the profound impact of the crime, stating that it had caused 'immense harm' to the victim. Edwards noted Ogur's recent arrival in Britain via a small boat just weeks before the attack but clarified that decisions regarding his continued stay in the United Kingdom would be determined by immigration authorities, not the court.

The case was reported by PA Reporter for the Express & Star, highlighting the swift progression from the social media meeting to the violent assault in the park. Ogur's conviction underscores the vulnerabilities associated with online interactions and the severe consequences for perpetrators of sexual violence.
