Offence Summary

Christopher Clinton, aged 60, engaged in online conversations with an undercover police officer, believing her to be a woman with a six-year-old daughter, and encouraged her to sexually abuse the child while expressing his own depraved intentions. He was subsequently arrested, pleaded guilty to arranging the commission of a child sex offence, and was jailed for two years and eight months at Nottingham Crown Court.

Full Description

Christopher Clinton, a 60-year-old man from Edwalton, Nottinghamshire, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to arranging the commission of a child sex offence. The case, investigated by Nottinghamshire Police's Internet Child Exploitation Team, came to light following online conversations that took place between November 2024 and January 2025.

Clinton initiated contact with an individual he believed to be a middle-aged woman on a social media network. Unbeknownst to him, this 'woman' was an undercover police officer. During their exchanges, Clinton befriended the officer and began guiding her on how to engage in sexual activity with a child he thought was her six-year-old daughter. He explicitly expressed a desire to develop an ongoing physical relationship with the purported child as she grew older, demonstrating a clear awareness of the child's young age.

Police investigators traced Clinton's username to an address in Edwalton, leading to his arrest on 4 March 2025. In his initial interview with officers, Clinton declined to answer most questions, only asserting that he did not pose a danger to any children. However, the evidence from the conversations painted a starkly different picture of his intentions.

Clinton appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on 1 April 2026, where he was formally sentenced. In addition to his custodial term, he was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order, which will strictly limit his future internet usage and access to children. PC Summer Smith, from Nottinghamshire Police’s Internet Child Exploitation Team, commented on the case: 'Clinton genuinely believed he was talking to another like-minded individual who would help him to realise his depraved sexual fantasies. He claimed in his police interview not to be a danger to children, but sadly this is exactly what he is. Because if he had his way then he would have facilitated very real harm to a real child somewhere in the world, which is why I am so pleased that he has now been sentenced.'

The sentencing underscores the vigilance of law enforcement in combating online child exploitation, with Nottinghamshire Police playing a pivotal role in preventing potential harm through proactive undercover operations.
