Full Description

A Scarborough man, Ashley Stephen Grime, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison following his conviction for a series of sexual assaults and acts of child cruelty against a boy. The offences, which took place in Scarborough, were reported to North Yorkshire Police in June 2020, leading to a sensitive and complex investigation headed by Detective Sergeant Laura Carroll of the Scarborough and Ryedale CID.

Grime, aged 31 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of eight offences at York Crown Court after a trial concluded at the end of March 2022. The charges included three counts of sexual assault on a child under 13, four counts of child cruelty, and one count of witness intimidation. Witnesses and the victim disclosed that Grime had repeatedly sexually touched the boy, causing a related injury that bled and required medical treatment. Grime instructed the boy not to tell anyone about the assaults and attempted to dismiss the injury as an accident, possibly caused by a trouser zip or sharp furniture.

In addition to the sexual offences, evidence revealed Grime's abusive behaviour, including verbal abuse towards the child, forcing him to watch a horror film, and threatening physical harm. DS Carroll described the behaviour as 'abhorrent' and noted that it had caused significant trauma to the victim and his family. She praised the courage shown by the boy and his loved ones during the investigation and trial, stating, 'The victim can now hopefully move on with his life with the support, love and protection of his family.'

During sentencing on 1 April 2022 at York Crown Court, Grime was also made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. DS Carroll emphasised Grime's lack of remorse, saying, 'He’s rightly been sent to prison and he will be subject to strict public protection measures for the rest of his life.' The case underscores the devastating impact of child abuse, with the prosecution highlighting the bravery required to bring such matters to justice.
