Offence Summary

Douglas Slade, a notorious paedophile from Bristol, abused multiple young boys in the UK and the Philippines before being sentenced to 24 years in prison in 2016 for child sex offences.

Full Description

Douglas Slade, once described as one of Britain’s most dangerous and manipulative paedophiles, was a prominent figure in the infamous Paedophile Information Exchange, a group that campaigned for the legalisation of sex with children. Operating from his parents’ home in the Knowle West area of south Bristol, Slade even ran a 'paedophile hotline' providing advice to others on how to groom children.

Between 1965 and 1980, Slade sexually abused five boys aged between 10 and 15. The victims were often from broken homes and were passed among paedophiles, receiving affection that masked the corruption and exploitation by older men for their own selfish pleasure, as heard at Bristol Crown Court. When exposed as a predator in 1985, Slade fled to the Philippines, where he evaded UK justice for 20 years due to the lack of an effective extradition treaty. There, in the red light district of Angeles City, he lived in a house opposite a primary school and abused a further five young boys, earning the nickname 'Pork Pie Paedophile' after setting up a company selling food to western expats. He was never prosecuted in Southeast Asia.

Slade was finally arrested and deported to the UK in 2015. In 2016, at Bristol Crown Court, he was convicted on 13 counts related to the abuse of his five UK victims and sentenced to 24 years in prison. The court highlighted his targeting of vulnerable children. In a landmark civil case in 2018, a judge ordered Slade to pay £127,500 in compensation to the five boys he abused in the Philippines.

DS Paul Melton of Avon and Somerset Police, who played a key role in the proceedings, stated: 'Slade always thought himself to be beyond the reaches of justice. I maintain that no child will ever be safe in his company. He is without doubt the most dangerous and manipulative child sex offender I have ever encountered.' Slade consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Slade died of heart failure on 31 October 2024 at HMP Isle of Wight, aged 83. A coroner’s inquest in January 2025 determined natural causes, and the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman’s report found no suspicious circumstances or concerns regarding his care, confirming it met community standards.
