Full Description

Tony Tonderayi Mazaiwana, a 38-year-old married father of three from Langdale Road, Lancaster, was jailed following a sexual assault on a 19-year-old Lancaster University student. The incident occurred on Saturday, 10 December 2016, near Milking Stile Lane in Lancaster. CCTV footage captured Mazaiwana walking around the city before spotting the victim and beginning to follow her.

The attack took place last year, as reported in the article from Lancaster University Students' Union SCAN, published on 20 October 2017. Mazaiwana overpowered the student and subjected her to a horrific ordeal. A member of the public intervened, prompting the offender to flee the scene. The victim demonstrated tremendous courage throughout the investigation and trial, according to Detective Constable Ben Benter of Lancaster CID.

At Preston Crown Court, Mazaiwana was found guilty of the sexual assault. Det Con Ben Benter described him as 'clearly a predatory man who followed and then overpowered his victim before subjecting her to a horrific ordeal.' Benter expressed satisfaction that Mazaiwana had been brought to justice and would now serve a significant period in prison. The case highlights ongoing concerns about sexual assaults affecting university students, though the focus remains on this specific incident and its resolution.

The victim shared in a personal statement that the attack has left her stressed about walking home from lectures, especially in the dark, making her nervous whenever someone is behind her and impacting her ability to revise for exams. This case underscores the predatory nature of the offence and the justice served through the court's decision.
