Full Description

Callum Williams, a 25-year-old man from Shildon, Durham, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison at Luton Crown Court on March 12, 2024, following his guilty plea to rape. The offence occurred in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, during the early hours of October 8, 2023, after Williams met the victim in a pub the previous evening.

On October 7, 2023, Williams encountered the woman in a pub in Hemel Hempstead town centre, where they shared drinks. He subsequently took her to the Premier Inn on Moor End Road, booking a room for the night. CCTV footage captured Williams carrying the intoxicated woman to the room, where he raped her while she lacked the capacity to consent due to excessive alcohol consumption. Toxicology results later confirmed her impaired state, undermining Williams' initial claim during police interview that the encounter was consensual.

At approximately 3:30am on October 8, hotel staff discovered the woman wandering the hallways in a confused condition and promptly alerted Hertfordshire Constabulary. Williams fled the scene, returning to his home in Shildon, Durham. Officers located and arrested him two days later, hiding in a shed. Despite his initial denial, Williams changed his plea to guilty upon receiving the toxicology evidence, sparing the victim a full trial.

Detective Constable Alice Garrett from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Sexual Offences Investigation Team described Williams as a "dangerous and calculated sexual predator" who "preyed on a woman who was in no position to give her consent". She highlighted his "flagrant disregard for his behaviour" and commended the victim's bravery in reporting the assault, which ensured accountability. In addition to the custodial sentence, Williams was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

The case underscores the importance of consent, with police emphasising that individuals must assume no consent exists if there is any doubt, particularly when alcohol or other factors impair judgement. Hertfordshire Constabulary investigated the matter thoroughly, leading to Williams' conviction.
