Full Description

Ambrose Thomas Stevenson, a 60-year-old man from the Gateshead area of England, has been imprisoned for a decade following his conviction for a series of sexual offences against a young girl in Northern Ireland. The case, heard at Belfast Crown Court, involved offences committed between June 2003 and September 2004, when the victim was just 10 years old. Stevenson was found guilty of two counts of rape and 10 counts of indecent assault earlier in the year, with the judge describing his actions as a 'chronic catalogue of offending' that was 'appalling', 'predatory', and 'repugnant'.

The abuse took place in the victim's family home in Greenisland, County Antrim. Stevenson, who had an address at Coverdale in the Gateshead area of Tyne and Wear, visited the home as an acquaintance of an adult resident. He befriended the child, lavishing her with attention to gain her trust. The grooming began innocuously when he offered to teach her how to kiss, claiming it would prepare her for secondary school. This quickly escalated into multiple incidents of indecent assault and culminated in rape, with the judge noting that Stevenson's behaviour involved deliberate planning and stole the girl's childhood.

Despite the guilty verdicts, Stevenson maintained his innocence and displayed no remorse. When the victim, now an adult, contacted the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to report the abuse, he denied all claims. At the sentencing hearing, which Stevenson attended via videolink from Maghaberry Prison, Judge Patrick Kinney praised the victim's courage, stating: 'I applaud her courage in coming forward and bringing him to justice.' He described the abuse as 'terrible' and 'relentless', inflicted by a man she had trusted, and expressed hope that the sentence would provide closure to this traumatic chapter in her life.

Stevenson received a Custody Probation Order: 10 years' custody followed by three years' probation. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely. The case was prosecuted by the PSNI, highlighting the long-term impact of child sexual exploitation and the importance of victims coming forward, as reported by BBC News in their coverage of the sentencing.
