Full Description

Daniel Kelly, a 36-year-old man from Callands, Warrington, has been imprisoned for his attempts to engage in sexual communications with a child. The incident came to light when Kelly began online chats in June 2023 with someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl, unaware that he was interacting with an adult member of the Saving Our Children Online paedophile hunter group.

The conversations, which took place over the internet, quickly turned explicit. Kelly, seeking sexual gratification, referred to the 'girl' as 'sexy' and requested nude photographs from her. He also sent a photograph of himself in his underwear, encouraging the supposed child to engage in sexual activity. These actions formed the basis of the charges against him: attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child and two counts of attempting to cause a child to engage in sexual activity.

Members of the paedophile hunter group confronted Kelly in public at the Patten Arms Hotel in Warrington. They discussed his online behaviour with him before alerting Cheshire Police, who arrived at the scene and arrested him. Kelly, residing at Wrexham Close in Callands, was subsequently charged and appeared before Liverpool Crown Court.

During the sentencing hearing, Recorder David Knifton heard details of how Kelly, as an adult, intentionally attempted to communicate with someone he did not reasonably believe to be 16 or over. The judge imposed a sentence of 30 months' immediate imprisonment on Kelly. In addition, he was issued with a sexual harm prevention order and ordered to sign the sex offenders' register, both for a period of 10 years.

This case highlights the efforts of paedophile hunter groups in identifying potential offenders online and the swift response by Cheshire Police in such matters. The Warrington Guardian reported on the sentencing, emphasising the dangers of online grooming and the legal consequences for those who attempt to exploit children.
