Full Description

A man from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for a series of sexual offences against a child that occurred over a two-year period. Stephen Torr, aged 46, of Nags Head Lane, was convicted following a retrial at Luton Crown Court.

The case came to light in October 2020 when the victim disclosed to someone that she had been abused during her younger years. Bedfordshire Police launched an investigation immediately after the disclosure. Tragically, the victim passed away before the investigation could be fully concluded, adding a layer of profound sadness to the proceedings.

The first trial took place in February 2025 but ended with a hung jury, necessitating a second trial. In September 2025, Torr was found guilty on one count of assault by penetration, one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and three counts of sexual assault. The offences spanned a two-year timeframe, highlighting the prolonged nature of the abuse.

On 25 March 2026, at Luton Crown Court, Torr was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment. In addition to the custodial sentence, he was made the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and required to sign the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely. The sentencing reflects the gravity of the crimes committed against a vulnerable child.

Detective Constable David Widdicombe of Bedfordshire Police commented on the case, stating: 'First and foremost our thoughts remain with the victim’s family. This was a truly harrowing case. Despite immense challenges, the victim showed remarkable courage in disclosing what had happened, and today’s sentence reflects the seriousness of Torr’s actions. Although she is sadly no longer with us to see this outcome, we hope this result brings a measure of justice for her and some comfort to those who loved and supported her. We remain committed to pursuing offenders who target vulnerable people and ensuring they are held fully accountable for their actions.' The investigation was handled by Bedfordshire Police, underscoring their dedication to supporting victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.
