Christopher Rome, a 28-year-old wrestling coach from South Shields, has been imprisoned for grooming and sexually abusing a young child in County Durham. The offences, which occurred over a few weeks, involved sexual communication, grooming, and multiple counts of sexual activity with the victim, who was a minor.
Prosecutor Johnny Walker outlined the case at Durham Crown Court, detailing how Rome initiated contact that escalated quickly. The first meeting took place in a car park, where Rome and the girl cuddled while watching YouTube videos. Shortly after, Rome sent intimate photographs of himself, prompting the girl to reciprocate with a single image. Subsequent encounters involved kissing and cuddling, culminating in sexual intercourse. Walker noted that the girl had become 'isolated and obsessional' according to her family, and she later confided in her mother about the abuse. During police interviews, Rome made full admissions to the offences.
The victim described the profound impact of Rome's actions in her statements. At the time, she recognised the encounters as 'bad' but felt unable to refuse as they had progressed too far. Her family observed her becoming secretive, leading to self-harm. In a more recent impact statement, she revealed feeling under Rome's 'spell', believing everything he said, which resulted in lost friendships, anxiety, diminished confidence, and embarrassment upon reflection.
In mitigation, defence counsel Chris Baker highlighted Rome's immediate admissions to police and in court, expressing remorse and full culpability. Baker also mentioned Rome's 'victim awareness', contrasting him with many similar defendants, and noted the loss of his employment, his lack of prior prison experience, and anticipated struggles in custody as per the probation report.
Judge Nathan Adams, sentencing Rome to a total of 64 months' imprisonment, emphasised the grooming through sexual messaging and arrangements for meetings. He stated, 'You may say it was consensual, but she was a child, and you were an adult. The effect it has had on her has been substantial.' Rome, previously of good character, must serve up to half his sentence in custody before release on licence. Additional measures include a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a ten-year restraining order against the victim, lifetime registration as a sex offender, and a lifetime ban from working with or supervising children.
The case was reported by The Northern Echo, with images provided by Durham Constabulary, underscoring the role of local law enforcement in the investigation.
