Offence Summary

Yohann Ramchelawon posed as a Justin Bieber lookalike online to groom schoolgirls into sending indecent images and admitted 14 sexual offences, including a sexual assault against a six-year-old. He was jailed for 15 years at Stafford Crown Court.

Full Description

Yohann Ramchelawon, a 30-year-old man originally from Mauritius and of no fixed address, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of sexual offences involving the grooming and exploitation of young girls online. Ramchelawon used bogus social media profiles, posing as a teenage Justin Bieber lookalike, to lure schoolgirls aged between 12 and 17 into sending him indecent images. He operated across platforms including Instagram, WhatsApp, Skype, and Facebook, initiating conversations that he would steer towards intimate topics before requesting naked images from the victims.

The investigation began when West Midlands Police traced an IP address used to message a 12-year-old girl from Manchester to a house in Walsall. This led to Ramchelawon's arrest in March at an address in Victoria Lane, Huddersall. Upon searching his devices, police discovered hundreds of indecent images and identified victims from locations across the UK, including Coventry, Walsall, Lanark, Liverpool, St Ives in Cambridgeshire, Shoreham-by-Sea, and East Ham in London. Further examination revealed he had also contacted girls in New Zealand, Brazil, the UAE, and Russia.

Some victims were coerced into performing sex acts in front of webcams after Ramchelawon threatened to share the images they had provided with their friends and family. Among the 14 offences he admitted were possessing indecent images of children and a sexual assault against a six-year-old. Initially denying the charges, Ramchelawon changed his plea to guilty during a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court before being sentenced at Stafford Crown Court.

In addition to the 15-year custodial sentence, Ramchelawon received an extended licence period of five years and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely. Following the sentencing, West Midlands Police released audio from an interview with the father of one of the victims, who expressed profound shock at the scale of the crimes. 'I can't wait to watch him get sent down, it gives us closure,' the father said. He added, 'When it first came to light we assumed it would just be my daughter and that was it. When it came to light how big it actually was it shocked us.' The case highlights the dangers of online grooming and the extensive reach of such predators across international boundaries.
