Full Description

A notorious sex offender from Tamworth, Peter Leigh Rogerson, has been imprisoned for 28 years following his conviction on 24 counts of non-recent sexual offences. The 58-year-old was found guilty at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in September 2023, with sentencing handed down on 5 April 2024. Staffordshire Police described Rogerson as a 'dangerous man' whose crimes spanned several years, involving acts of rape, sexual assault, sexual assault of a child, and indecent assault against multiple survivors.

The investigation into Rogerson's offences was a meticulous four-year effort by Staffordshire Police, culminating in overwhelming evidence that led to his trial and conviction. Detective Constable Alex Goldman, who played a key role in the case, praised the survivors for their 'incredible bravery' in coming forward. 'The survivors in this case have been paramount in making sure Rogerson answers to his crimes and is imprisoned for the longest possible time,' Goldman stated. Their courage not only exposed the extent of Rogerson's predatory behaviour but also ensured he faced the toughest possible punishment.

In addition to the 28-year custodial sentence, Rogerson received a six-year extended licence period, was added to the sex offenders' register for life, and made the subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order. These measures aim to protect the public from further harm by restricting his activities post-release. Goldman emphasised the police's commitment to tackling such crimes, saying, 'We are committed to pursuing perpetrators of violence, abuse and intimidation against women and girls as robustly as possible and I hope this serves as an example of that.'

The case highlights the challenges in prosecuting historical sexual offences, where evidence was painstakingly gathered over time to build a robust prosecution. Staffordshire Police's determination, combined with the survivors' resolve, has resulted in Rogerson being put 'behind bars' for a significant duration, providing some measure of justice for those affected.
