Offence Summary

Mohammed Abu Sayid, an Ipswich chef, was convicted of multiple sexual offences against children, including rape and sexual assault, and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

Full Description

Mohammed Abu Sayid, a 43-year-old chef from Ipswich, was sentenced to 23 years in jail at Ipswich Crown Court for a series of sexual offences against young girls. The court heard that Sayid exploited his self-proclaimed status as an 'alpha male' to gain access to his victims, manipulate them emotionally, and carry out a campaign of abuse that left lasting psychological and physical harm.

Sayid, residing on Queensberry Road in Ipswich, was found unanimously guilty by a jury on Thursday, 9 April 2024, following a trial where he had denied all charges. The offences included six counts of sexual activity with a child, sexual assault, assault by penetration, and four counts of rape against one victim, as well as additional charges of rape and sexual assault against another. The victims, schoolgirls at the time of the abuse, provided harrowing testimony on Friday, 10 April 2024, detailing the profound impact of Sayid's actions on their lives.

  • One victim described how the abuse led to suicidal thoughts, constant stress, and difficulties in forming intimate relationships into adulthood.
  • She recounted physical health deterioration, including loss of consciousness, frequent migraines, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, and extreme hair loss, stating: 'He took my health, my peace and for many years I felt like he took my soul. I have lived as a shell of myself, disconnected and surviving.'
  • Another victim expressed: 'I think that paedophilia is a worse crime than murder itself. I did not want to endure the mental anguish and pure fear of being sexually abused anymore. I began thinking 'life is so hard and how I am going to continue living?' I wanted to forget everything so much.'

Judge Samantha Leigh, during sentencing, emphasised that there was 'no mitigation' for Sayid's crimes, noting the consequences for his own children as a married father. She stated: 'You used your status as an alpha male to get access to them, to silence them and to normalise your behaviour.' The judge highlighted the predatory nature of Sayid's actions, which targeted vulnerable young victims for his sexual gratification.

Detective Constable Gemma Spink, the officer in charge of the investigation for Suffolk Police, commended the victims' bravery in coming forward. She described Sayid as 'a sexual predator, who targeted his young victims in the pursuit of sexual gratification and showed absolutely no consideration for the effect his actions would have had on them.' Spink added that the case demonstrated it is 'never too late to report sexual abuse and that victims will be believed.' The article, reported by Dominic Bareham for the Ipswich Star, underscores the severity of child sexual exploitation in the UK and the judicial response in Suffolk.
