Full Description

Christopher Lilley, a 33-year-old police constable with Nottinghamshire Police, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for possessing and creating indecent images of children. The case came to light following intelligence shared by the FBI with British authorities, leading to Lilley's arrest in September 2002.

Lilley, residing at Sherwood Rise in Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire, had amassed a substantial collection of child sexual abuse material. Between November 1998 and July 1999, he paid £156 to access multiple American websites that hosted pornographic content featuring children under the age of 16 being sexually abused. Prosecutors revealed that these sites provided links to an extensive network of similar material.

Upon raiding Lilley's home, officers seized his computer and an additional hard drive, uncovering 1,005 indecent photographs and 26 video clips depicting child sexual abuse. In a particularly disturbing aspect of the case, Lilley admitted to manipulating some images by superimposing the heads of children he personally knew onto naked bodies, exacerbating the severity of his offences.

At Derby Crown Court, Gillian Foxcroft, prosecuting, outlined the charges: Lilley pleaded guilty to eight counts of making indecent photographs of children and six counts of making indecent videos. During his police interview following the arrest, Lilley confessed to the downloads, stating, 'It's because I am sad, sick and stupid.' The court heard that Lilley had served with Nottinghamshire Police for 12 years prior to his dismissal in connection with these crimes.

The sentencing reflects the gravity of child sexual exploitation offences, with the judge emphasising the betrayal of public trust by a serving officer. This case, reported by BBC News on 20 March 2003, underscores the international cooperation in combating online child abuse networks.
