Offence Summary

Andrew Moore, a convicted paedophile, was jailed for five years after attempting to groom children in Sheffield while serving a suspended sentence for historic sexual offences.

Full Description

A 51-year-old man from Upperthorpe, Sheffield, has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempting to groom children, just a year after receiving a suspended sentence for previous sexual offences. Andrew Moore, described by police as devious and manipulative, targeted two families' children in the summer of 2018, buying expensive gifts to befriend them and gain access to the young victims.

Moore had been given a suspended sentence in 2017 for historic sexual offences against two victims. Despite this, in summer 2018, he tried to make inappropriate contact with children from two families. His efforts to ingratiate himself into the families were thwarted when police were alerted, leading to his arrest. The case was heard at Sheffield Crown Court, where the severity of his actions was highlighted.

John Bowler from South Yorkshire Police stated: "Moore has shown himself to be a devious and manipulative individual, grooming children and attempting to ingratiate himself into families to gain access to young people." This incident underscores the ongoing risk posed by individuals with prior convictions for sexual offences, even while under suspended sentences. South Yorkshire Police played a key role in the investigation and prosecution, ensuring Moore was brought to justice promptly.

The sentencing reflects the court's recognition of the gravity of grooming attempts, particularly by a repeat offender. Moore's actions not only violated the terms of his suspended sentence but also endangered children, prompting a return to custodial measures to protect the public.
