Offence Summary

Stephen Scott sexually assaulted a teenager while she slept after a party, repeatedly having unwanted sexual contact with her despite her pleas to stop. He was jailed for four years and three months after admitting three counts of sexual assault.

Full Description

Stephen Scott, a 26-year-old man from South Shields, was sentenced to four years and three months in prison at Newcastle Crown Court for sexually assaulting a teenager. The assault occurred after a party when the victim was sleeping and frozen with terror, during which Scott repeatedly engaged in unwanted sexual contact with her, ignoring her pleas for him to stop.

The court heard that the victim, who described feeling 'stuck and frozen' during the persistent assault, reported the incident to police the following day despite Scott's apology that morning. Initially, Scott pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault, but he later attempted to vacate his pleas, prolonging the legal process and exacerbating the victim's trauma by placing her in fear of having to give evidence. Judge Thomas Moran noted that Scott had lied to police, first claiming no sexual activity occurred and then stating he could not recall the events, which the judge deemed 'extremely unlikely to be true'.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the young woman detailed the profound impact of Scott's actions. She stated that she had 'loved life' and 'didn't have a care in the world' before the assault, but now felt 'lost, scared and empty' and 'absolutely broken'. The wait for the case to resolve was described as 'absolute torture', with initial relief from Scott's guilty plea 'crashing down' when he sought to retract it. Despite the ordeal, she affirmed her determination, saying she was seeking help and 'not going to let that vile boy ruin my life'. Judge Moran praised her 'courage' in reporting the crime and highlighted how Scott's attempts to change his pleas added to her suffering.

The case was prosecuted with involvement from Northumbria Police, as indicated by the image source in the BBC News article published on the day of sentencing. This incident underscores the severe psychological toll of sexual assault and the importance of victim support throughout the judicial process.
