Full Description

A former British police officer, Lewis Edwards, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 12 years following his guilty plea to over 100 child sex offences. Edwards, aged 24, targeted more than 200 young girls on Snapchat by posing as a teenage boy, grooming them into sharing indecent images and resorting to blackmail when they resisted.

Edwards joined South Wales Police in 2021 and was a serving officer during the majority of his offences. He was arrested in February 2023 after his actions came to light. Prosecutors detailed how he contacted 210 girls aged between 10 and 16, manipulating them psychologically to gain control. In one particularly harrowing instance, Edwards threatened to bomb a victim's house and shoot her parents if she ceased sending images, instilling profound fear to ensure compliance.

The sentencing took place at Cardiff Crown Court, where Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke described Edwards as a 'prolific offender' who posed a high risk to children. She characterised his behaviour as 'cruel and sadistic', noting: 'The defendant pretended to be a boy of a similar age. He groomed his victims psychologically, manipulating them until he had gained control. It is clear that he not only gained sexual gratification but he also enjoyed the power he had over the young girls.' The judge further highlighted the significant harm caused to the reputation of South Wales Police and policing in general.

Edwards pleaded guilty to approximately 160 counts of child sex offences and blackmail. He was dismissed from the force earlier in 2023 following a police misconduct hearing. Notably, Edwards refused to attend the sentencing hearing, despite the presence of many victims and their families in the public gallery. Snapchat issued a statement affirming their efforts to combat such abuse, including detection technology and protections for under-18s, such as pop-up warnings for contacts from unknown individuals.

This case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the exploitation enabled by social media platforms. Edwards' actions exploited his position of trust as a police officer, amplifying the betrayal felt by victims and the public. The Independent reported on the sentencing, drawing from court proceedings and statements from prosecutors and the judiciary.
