Offence Summary

Stephen Greg Scollard violently raped a 15-year-old girl in an isolated location in Seaham after she refused his advances, and was also found guilty of raping another 15-year-old girl in Hartlepool. He was sentenced to 19 years in prison with a 4-year extension period.

Full Description

In January 2022, Stephen Greg Scollard, a 42-year-old man from Wingate, County Durham, drove a 15-year-old girl to an isolated location in Seaham, County Durham, and demanded that she have sex with him. Despite her clear refusal, Scollard forcibly lifted her from the passenger seat of his vehicle and subjected her to a violent rape.

Following the assault, Durham Constabulary launched a thorough investigation, charging Scollard with sexual assault and rape. While awaiting trial, Scollard came under further scrutiny from Cleveland Police, who investigated him for the rape of another 15-year-old girl in Hartlepool. He was found guilty of this additional offence and remanded in custody as the Durham investigation proceeded.

Initially, during police interviews, Scollard denied the Seaham rape. However, confronted with overwhelming evidence, he pleaded guilty to the charges at Teesside Crown Court in December 2025. In a sentencing hearing held in February 2026, he received a custodial sentence of 19 years' imprisonment, accompanied by a 4-year extended licence period due to the serious nature of the child sex offences.

A detective from Durham Constabulary involved in the case stated: "Scollard has an obvious interest in girls who he can manipulate, control and intimidate." The officer praised the victim's bravery in reporting the crime, noting that her courage ensured Scollard's lengthy incarceration. The investigation highlighted Scollard's attempts to deceive authorities throughout the process, describing it as a long and complex journey supported by the victim and her family.

This case underscores the commitment of Durham Constabulary and Cleveland Police to pursuing justice in sexual offence matters, particularly those involving the exploitation of vulnerable minors. The offences occurred within the United Kingdom, specifically in the North East England region.
