A Chatham man has been jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of multiple child sex offences committed over five years ago. Cameron Barnes, aged 27 and residing in Westgate, Chatham, targeted a young girl, subjecting her to repeated sexual abuse despite her clear objections.

The offences came to light when the victim bravely disclosed the abuse to Kent Police, revealing that Barnes had raped her on four separate occasions and also committed an additional sexual assault. Barnes denied all charges but was convicted on every count after a thorough trial at Canterbury Crown Court. Sentencing occurred on Tuesday, 19 November 2019, where the court imposed a 15-year custodial sentence, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

Detective Constable Emily Hooper, the investigating officer from Kent Police, highlighted the victim's courage in coming forward. 'Despite the victim’s age, and repeatedly being told it was against her wishes, Barnes subjected her to continual sexual abuse,' she stated. 'It took a huge amount of courage to report his offending and face him in court, when he chose to call her character into question rather than admit his appalling crimes. I am pleased that we have secured justice for her and hope this result encourages other victims of unreported sexual abuse to get in contact with us so we can support them and pursue justice.'
