Melvin Walker, a 64-year-old resident of Sittingbourne in Kent, was convicted and sentenced for a series of sexual offences against children that occurred nearly two decades ago. The case, reported by KentOnline, highlights the long-term psychological trauma inflicted on his victims and Walker's persistent sexual attraction to children.
The offences came to light after reports from two young girls who had endured abuse at Walker's hands. Walker was charged with six counts of sexual assault of a girl under 13 and one count of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child. A jury at Maidstone Crown Court found him guilty on all seven counts following a trial. Additionally, Walker had pleaded guilty in 2021 at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court to making indecent images of children, for which he faced sentencing alongside the more serious charges.
Details of the abuse revealed that Walker preyed on vulnerable young victims, touching their private parts and exploiting their trust. One victim recounted waking up to find Walker's hand down her underwear, while on another occasion, he placed money in her bra and grabbed her breast. Years later, a second victim reported that Walker had shown her pornographic images on his phone when she was just four years old. Upon his arrest, police searched his devices and discovered dozens of indecent images, including three Category A, five Category B, and 69 Category C images, corroborating the victim's description.
The court heard that the offences had a 'very significant' psychological impact on the victims' lives. One victim's impact statement expressed gratitude to the jury for believing her account, noting she still felt 'broken' from the ordeal, suffering from paranoia and a loss of confidence in parenting. Judge Oliver Saxby KC, during the sentencing hearing, addressed the profound harm caused, stating: 'You did not just abuse a child, and a vulnerable one at that, you damaged an entire future. The damage you caused her is immeasurable.' He described Walker as a 'dangerous paedophile with no insight into why this is what you are,' and noted the 'irretrievable harm caused to so many people by your unwillingness to curb or address your sexual attraction to children.' Walker had a prior conviction for nine offences related to making indecent images of children.
Walker received a 16-year prison sentence, comprising 12 years in custody and a four-year extended licence period. He was also issued a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a lifetime restraining order protecting both victims. The sentencing took place at Maidstone Crown Court, with the case handled by Kent Police.
