Full Description

Lawrence Pollard, a 76-year-old resident of Front Street in Middleton on the Wolds, East Yorkshire, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for committing multiple child sexual offences in the 1970s. The case, which came to light following reports made in 2018, culminated in a seven-day trial at Hull Crown Court where Pollard was found guilty on 15 out of 17 charges.

Pollard initially pleaded not guilty to the allegations but was convicted after the jury deliberated on the evidence presented. The offences involved the sexual abuse of three vulnerable children, with Pollard exploiting his position of trust to perpetrate the acts for his own gratification. The investigation was led by Humberside Police, who described the case as complex and ensured a thorough examination of all evidence to secure justice.

Detective Police Constable Stephen Bromby, the officer in charge of the investigation from Humberside Police, commented on the case: “This was a complex investigation and we made sure no stone was left unturned in order to bring this abhorrent man to justice. Pollard abused his position of trust and preyed on three innocent and vulnerable children for his own sick sexual gratification. I am reassured that he is now facing considerable time behind bars.” Bromby also praised the victims for their bravery in coming forward after decades, noting that their reports in 2018 initiated the probe that led to Pollard's conviction.

The sentencing occurred on 29 June 2024 at Hull Crown Court. While the court outcome cannot erase the long-term suffering endured by the victims, it represents a significant step towards accountability. Humberside Police have reiterated their commitment to pursuing historical sexual abuse cases, emphasising support for survivors who report such crimes.
